Chinese New Year is celebrated in Sydney with a month long festival with official launch, parade, lion dancing, fireworks, markets, dragon boat races, and fine food.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in Sydney every year and has become a month long celebration of Chinese culture and food with markets, lanterns, dragon boat races, a parade, lion dances, and firecrackers.

Sydney has a large Chinese population and what was once a relatively small cultural festival has now blossomed into an annual celebration that lasts almost a month. Come along and herald in the Year Of The Pig at the Chinese New Year Festival from 9th February – 4th March 2007.

Launch of the Chinese New Year Festival

Date: February 9th 2007

Time: 5pm for food, entertainment and fresh produce.

7pm for the official opening.

Place: Belmore Park, on the corner of Pitt Street and Eddy Avenue, Sydney.

At 5pm relax and watch the entertainment or try a sample of aromatic and delicious Chinese (and Asian) food. Fresh produce will also be available.

The official launch of the New Year Festivities will be at 7pm. Following the opening address from the Lord Mayor of Sydney the real fun begins, with lion and dragon dancers, firecrackers exploding to ward off bad luck, and international as well local performers.

Chinese New Year Parade

Date: February 11th 2007

Time: 11am -12.30pm for the parade, entertainment continues until 8pm.

Place: Town Hall to Chinatown with entertainment in Belmore Park, on the corner of Pitt Street and Eddy Avenue, Sydney.

The Chinese New Year Parade in Sydney is a vibrant, energetic spectacular of dragons, lions, music and dance and features enormous lanterns representing the Chinese zodiac. The parade stretches from Town Hall to Chinatown.

After the parade visit Belmore Park for children’s activities, more entertainment, and a wide variety of delicious food.

Markets

Date: February 16th – 17th 2007

Time: February 16th/18th (New Years Day) 11.00am-10.00pm, 17th (New Years Eve) 11.00am-1.00am

Place: Dixon Street Mall, Chinatown.

Chinatown is transformed for the New Years Festival with bright decorations and a festive atmosphere. From February 16th to the 18th an authentic Asian street market lines Dixon Street Mall. The stalls hold fascinating delights; food, flowers, gifts, jewellery, statuary, and even Chinese horoscopes.

The markets will be open until 1am on Saturday February 17th to see in the New Year.

Dragon Boat Races

Date: February 24th/25th 2007

Time: 8am-5pm

Place: Darling Harbour

Sydney takes on the flavour of China with exciting Dragon Boat races at Darling Harbour. If the Dragon Boat Races are not enough to keep you enthralled then enjoy the other entertainment provided for spectators; food stalls, performers and beautiful decorations.
