Summer vacation time is here in Australia and it's time to travel. Families have long booked their accommodation and activities. The roads are chaotic between Christmas and New Years day as the cities empty out for the four week school holiday break. If you are thinking of travelling at this time you will pay premium rates and your vacation will probably not be very peaceful.
The big question is where do the locals go for their summer vacation? The answer is everywhere and anywhere. Australians love to travel. They are happy to hop into a car and drive for hours to reach their favourite holiday spot. The truth is, in January Australians are vacationing everywhere. They have a preference for coastal destinations, but most "tourist" destinations will be busy and accommodation hard to come by.
Personally, I prefer to travel in off season, summer is just too hectic and usually too expensive, but if you want to "hit the road" in January try some of the smaller towns just outside the main tourist centres for example, drive into Sydney from an outer suburb or stay a little inland from the coast and it is always wise to make a call ahead of time to check what is available.
